Where (and When) to Watch the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Portland

The 2023 Women’s World Cup, happening in Australia and New Zealand between July 20 and August 20, presents timing challenges for the West Coast soccer fan: the vast majority of the tournament’s 64 games start between midnight and 3 a.m. Pacific time.
That means you may need to alter your sleep-caffeine-work schedule to cheer on your favorite Thorns and teams. Bars that stay open till the OLCC-mandated booze-sales cutoff of 2:30 a.m. should be a safe bet for midnight games—and most of the places we contacted planned to extend some hours. Here are a few places where we’ll be catching a game.

Pioneer Courthouse Square

The Sports Bra is cohosting a watch party at Pioneer Courthouse Square for Team USA’s opener at 6 p.m. Friday, July 21.

The Sports Bra
Sullivan's gulch
Hailed as the first sports bar in the world dedicated to showing women’s games, the Sports Bra is a go-to for WNBA, NWSL, tennis, college softball, and more. The bar aims to extend its usual 11 p.m. closing time for some games, starting with the tournament’s opener at midnight the night of Wednesday, July 19 (technically Thursday morning), between cohost New Zealand and Norway.

Slim’s

Slim's
st. Johns
Bingo enthusiasts might outnumber soccer scarf wearers at Slim’s, but this classic St. Johns dive bar (regular hours 7 a.m.–2:30 a.m.) with a surprisingly satisfying menu and cheap pints is a soccer bar nonetheless, with regulars coming in for breakfast Premier League viewing on weekends. The two TVs aren’t very big, but plenty of bar stools offer a good view.
8635 N Lombard St
Prost!
Boise
Soccer seekers, rest assured: this German pub and food-cart hub will be airing World Cup games, as indicated by its steady programming of European games on the TVs inside and a Thorns scarf tacked next to the TV on the patio outside. Prost is an official pub partner of the Portland team, and is open 11 a.m to 2:30 a.m. daily.

Gol
Buckman
If you value your sleep, Gol is for you: this dedicated soccer pub won’t be open for every game, but it will be showing the predawn games on replay when it opens for the day, usually at 10 a.m.
1739 SE Hawthorne blvd
Tik Tok
Powellhurst-Gilbert
For your meal-while-cheering in the middle of the night, make your way to the Tik-Tok on SE 82nd Avenue, where you can chow down on a very late meatloaf dinner or very early eggy breakfast. Open 24 hours.
3330 SE 82nd Ave
Other Options
These are far from the only option: Kells, Hopworks, the Civic Taproom, your corner tavern, and any sports bar worth its salt should have at least one TV set to the World Cup for games during their opening hours—and at least two during those simultaneous final group games (if they're open past midnight, when the earliest of those start).
Watching from Home
The late hours lend themselves to home watching. English-language broadcasts in the US will be on Fox or the Fox Sports cable channel, while Spanish broadcasts are split between Telemundo and Universo. The Spanish coverage will also be available on the Peacock app.
