Want to write for us?
Portland Monthly is always accepting digital and print story pitches. On our website, we accept pitches for our 7 major channels: News & City Life, Eat & Drink, Style & Shopping, Arts & Culture, Travel & Outdoors, Home & Real Estate, and Health & Wellness. For our quarterly print magazine, we accept pitches for the following departments: Dispatch, Canteen, Afield, and Arts & Culture. We also accept pitches for full-length feature stories on news, culture, or lifestyle.
We are particularly interested in News & City Life stories, trend pieces, profiles highlighting influential Portlanders, essays exploring the eccentricities of life here, well-researched and reported narrative longform, and in-depth magazine features tackling the complex issues that dominate our citywide conversations. Note that we begin the editorial process several months in advance, so please pitch any print stories designed for a particular issue six months before that issue would hit newsstands.
Prior to submitting your ideas, please read two or three issues of Portland Monthly, or familiarize yourself with our digital content, to get a sense for our tone.
Send us the following materials:
- A concise story proposal (5-6 sentences at most) that lays out the angle of your story, shows that you’ve done enough research to know what you’re talking about, and identifies sources with whom you might speak. Your pitch should also tell us which section or department of Portland Monthly you think your story might be appropriate for.
- No more than three clips.
- A single paragraph summarizing your experience as a writer or editor.
E-mail is the best way to submit your proposals. Please type “Freelance Submission” into the subject line and send it to: [email protected].
