Home Smart Furniture is officially open for business. Located in a newly renovated, 4,000-square-foot space in North Portland’s Janzten Beach Shopping Center, Home Smart features carefully curated lifestyle settings with contemporary, on-trend sofas, sectionals, chairs, bedroom groups, occasional tables, and stylish accessories. 

Like most great things, Home Smart Furniture did not happen overnight. After a lifetime in the Portland furniture and mattress industry, plus 25 years owning BedMart Mattress Superstores, the Stone family was inspired to add a mix of furniture to their large-format mattress outlet stores. “We had these locations that were too big to be mattress-only stores, so my dad decided to go back to our family’s roots and add furniture to the mix,” says Elana Stone Anderson, Spokesperson and Vice President of Marketing for BedMart, and now furniture buyer for Home Smart. 

A few years (and five locations) later, BedMart’s furniture program now ranges from $299 sofas at their outlet stores to the heirloom-quality Stressless by Ekornes custom line at their comfort studio mattress stores. “Regardless of which of our store formats I’m buying furniture for, it needs to be the best in kind, so I use the 4C’s Diamond grading test that I’ve adapted as a guide: Comfort, Color, Cover, and Cost. Style is just as critical, but couldn’t I come up with a fifth C for it,” laughs Anderson. 

“The response to the offerings we were bringing in was incredible,” she continues. “It became clear that Portland didn’t have many quality mid-range furniture stores to choose from, so we decided to open Home Smart Furniture.”

Home Smart is not your typical furniture store, but it is one that Portland desperately needs: a smart, chic selection of furniture with styles and prices that compete with the major national brands. While the size of the store may be compact in comparison to traditionally cavernous furniture showrooms, the bright and welcoming space offers a refreshing, uncluttered shopping experience, with pieces ranging from mid-century modern to coastal farmhouse, and everything in between.

“Shopping here is easy. We put complete room packages together where everything coordinates,” says Anderson. “You can buy it all, or pick and choose which items you want. Our savvy design team will be there to help you either way.” 

New inventory comes in (and out) of the store frequently, making Home Smart Furniture a place to check out every time you’re in the neighborhood, or whenever you’re looking for a new look or a special piece.
