“Adventure can mean different things to different people,” says Mary Jones, founding partner of Nestucca Ridge Family of Companies. In other words, while Headlands Coastal Lodge & Spa may entice coast-goers with surfing, kayaking, and hiking, they’re also making room for guests in search of cozier, indoor adventures, like lounging in their oceanview hot tub or indulging in a massage. Every type of adventurer is welcome here.

Found two hours from Portland in the laid-back fishing hamlet of Pacific City, this oceanfront lodge offers all the amenities of a high-class resort without the stuffy pretension. Headlands boasts 33 guest rooms, a full-service spa and wellness center, a restaurant and bar, and private oceanfront cottages with full kitchens (available for a visit, or for purchase, if you’re in the market). “We encourage adventure,” says Jones. “We welcome you to bring the things that will make your stay enjoyable.” That’s why every room is equipped with racks for surfboards and bikes (don’t be embarrassed to bring your wet, sandy board into this hotel) and the latest technology, including “Do Not Disturb” master buttons and iPads for contacting the front desk.

You don’t have to go out of your way to find adventure at Headlands. They’re dedicated to helping guests enjoy the unique exploits Pacific City and the coast have to offer. Always wanted to try deep-sea fishing? An Adventure Coach (Headlands’ version of a concierge, because “at the beach that sounds pretentious”) can set you up with an at-sea escapade on one of the local dory fishing boats, which shove off right from the lodge.

Adventure Coaches are equipped with knowledge and access to the region’s best activities, from booking guests a paragliding lesson or surfboard rental to knowing the best time and spot for tidepooling. With their help you can brave the Pacific Ocean in a kayak, stand up paddleboard on the Nestucca River, climb to the top of Cascade Head, or venture out on a nature hike for some bird watching at Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge (a winter habitat for the formerly endangered Semidi Island Aleutian Cackling Geese, an icon of Pacific City.)

For the adrenaline or nature-averse, there are indoor adventures aplenty at Headlands. The on-site spa is a bastion of coastal serenity and rejuvenation. Guests can book a massage or facial, practice yoga on the beach, or sweat it out on a cutting-edge Peloton bike (with live-streaming cycling classes available 24/7.) A world-class meal can be an adventure of its own. Headland’s emphasis on casual elegance is embodied in their restaurant, Meridian. In addition to the local fishing fleet providing the freshest seafood imaginable, chef Andrew Garrison and staff use locally-sourced, hyper-seasonal ingredients throughout the menu. Not to mention, all bread and pastries are baked fresh in-house. Although the kitchen turns out these high-quality dishes in a luxurious oceanview dining room, no one will shun you for showing up to dine in your beach clothes.

It’s not only about big adventures; the staff at Headlands pays attention to the details too. In place of the overpriced, and underwhelming, vending machine snacks at most hotels, you’ll find an honor-system pantry on every floor stocked with unique, reasonably-priced local treats, like Goofy Foot’s spiced pretzels and iconic Tillamook ice cream, along with glass water bottles you can refill with still or sparkling water throughout your stay. After paddling in the ocean, or in the hot tub, you’ll be even more grateful for those snacks!
