Domaine Serene Teams Up With the Trail Blazers

Domaine Serene Vineyards and Winery has never been one to sit still or rest on its laurels. Founded by Grace and Ken Evenstad in 1989 with a determination to create the world’s finest Pinot Noir, Domaine Serene added Chardonnay to the mix with the 1997 vintage, then launched an ambitious sparkling wine program with the 2014 vintage.
Beyond adding different grapes and styles to the equation, Domaine Serene has consistently challenged and evolved what an Oregon winery can do. The Evenstads even flipped the script on the traditional dynamic between Oregon and Burgundy, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay’s spiritual home.
For decades, Burgundian vintners have been lured by Oregon’s ideal grape-growing climate to develop Oregon winery projects. But in 2015, the Evenstads acquired Château de la Crée, a 15th century Château in the village of Santenay in Burgundy, France, along with 25 acres of prime Burgundy vineyards. They followed this coup de grâce with the addition of 15 acres of vineyards, including rarefied Grand Cru and Premier Cru parcels, in June of this year.
Outside of the vineyards, be they in Oregon or France, Domaine Serene continues to expand and meet wine lovers wherever they might be. This expansive approach led to the launch of the Domaine Serene Wine Lounge at Sentinel in downtown Portland in 2018, followed by the Wine Lounge in Lake Oswego in 2019, starting a trend that several other wineries have now started to follow.
Now in an even bolder move, Domaine Serene has been drafted as the Portland Trail Blazers’ Luxury Wine of Choice beginning with the 2021-2022 season. In addition to pouring their Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Rosé throughout the Moda Center Luxury Suites and Oro Fino speakeasy, Domaine Serene is debuting two Wine Studios at Moda Center. Totaling 7,500 square feet, these luxury suites showcase large format-bottles, evocative winery and vineyard photography, and player-signed bottles and jerseys.
“NBA players have been embracing wine appreciation and collecting for years. Just months ago, Wine Spectator profiled the affinity between wine and basketball in a cover story photographed in the Domaine Serene Wine Lounge in Lake Oswego,” said Ryan Harris, CEO & President of Domaine Serene. “This community’s appreciation of Domaine Serene wines in particular has inspired us to take the wine-and-basketball pairing to the next level. The opportunity to bolster our relationship with the Trail Blazers and their fans is a slam dunk.”
Members of Domaine Serene’s wine club will be able to attend Trail Blazers’ home games in the Wine Studios by redeeming rewards points, a unique aspect of Domaine Serene wine club membership in which points are earned for every dollar spent on wine. The Wine Studio is just the latest addition to rewards offerings for wine club members, which also include overnight stays at winery guest houses in Oregon and Château stays in France. Further afield, Domaine Serene is opening its third Wine Lounge in December 2021 in Bend, 160 miles south-east of the winery in the Dundee Hills. The newest Domaine Serene Wine Lounge will be located in the D.H. Sphier Building at the corner of Bond Street and Minnesota Avenue in downtown Bend.
Constructed in 1917 and recently added to the National Register of Historic Places, the Domaine Serene Wine Lounge in Bend will welcome guests across three dramatically renovated levels, including a Members’ Mezzanine and Cellar Library available for private events. Domaine Serene Wine Club members will also have the opportunity to lease temperature-controlled 48-bottle wine lockers. A thoughtful menu will complement a full array of more than 70 wines from Domaine Serene, Château de la Crée, and Maison Evenstad.
“Our goal is always to extend the hospitality we offer and the rewards our wine clubs provide far beyond the Dundee Hills,” explained Harris. “Bend has a special mix of appreciation for good living, tempered with an unpretentious and adventurous spirit. That makes Bend the ideal next outpost for the Domaine Serene Wine Lounge.”
