The hustle and bustle of the holiday season has many people craving a personal holiday experience. At The Canyons Alley, local makers and artisans are offering an array of handcrafted items and gifts. From artwork, vintage clothing and furniture, new apparel, plants and handmade cosmetics and holiday gifts, the pop-up shops are open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through the end of the year (see hours below). Every two weeks, they will also host Blackthorn Mercantile’s traditional outdoor market. The Canyons Alley is nestled between NE Fremont Ave and NE Ivy St in North Portland, and is the brainchild of Kaiser + Path, a design, build, develop firm who designed 15 charming micro-business spaces next to The Canyons apartment building. 

“Our hope is to create an environment that benefits local businesses and makers that gives them a space to have their own brick and mortar shop. Many have established themselves within the community at Portland Markets over the years, while others are making their grand debut. The Canyons is very excited to be a part of their journey as local businesses,” said Jennifer Dillan, Marketing and Development Manager at Kaiser + Path.

Featured artists include Bobby Adams, Daren Todd, Anna Rogers, and Courtney Knight, and shops Rogue Roots Vintage, Garden Party, Caravan Co. and Switchblade Sistas Vintage. They are joining other established Canyons Alley retail vendors, such as Grochau Cellars Wine Bar, Mary Jean clothing, Hamono Sushi and Ramen, and the upscale MATSIS SMITH Salon. The Canyons Alley features a unique open-air marketplace that brings the local flavor of the neighborhood to the building. It’s modeled after Japan’s narrow, bustling yokocho alleys, which are packed with eateries and small shops. “The Canyons Alley is designed as a collection of small shops,” said Dillan. “It’s an intimate, engaging passageway where people can eat, shop, stroll, people-watch, support local entrepreneurs, and connect with folks from the surrounding neighborhood.”

The Canyons is a new six-story multigenerational apartment building designed to foster community and a sense of belonging. Built with a modern, sustainable design that includes mass timber construction, fresh air, and calm, beautiful interiors, every apartment is ADA-compliant and features an open air atrium with fresh air flowing through the center of the building. The Canyons offers all the joys of home without the hassles of ownership. There’s no HOA, no property taxes, and no maintenance.
