Chamber Music presents more than 60 events featuring dozens of world-renowned musicians.

Presented by Chamber Music Northwest June 21, 2022

CMNW World Premiere Vineyard Rhythms by Oregon composer David Schiff celebrates the hibernation-to-harvest life of Sokol Blosser Vineyard.

With the warm breezes and longer days, the scent of grills, roses, and sunscreen, also comes the shimmer of music wafting, drifting through the air…

Can’t you just feel, smell, and hear summer calling?

Chamber Music Northwest Artistic Directors Gloria Chien and Soovin Kim perform with CMNW

Summertime is festival season, and for the past 52 years Chamber Music Northwest’s summer festival tradition has endured, brimming with exhilarating music. From honoring classics to exploring new compositions created by award-winning composers, CMNW’s 2022 Summer Festival is burgeoning with delightful music.

This is an invitation to come see what you’ve been missing, or to revisit our festival with this year’s fresh take on programming, and continued mission to explore the range of today’s chamber music.

Citywide for five weeks — June 25 through July 31— the 2022 Summer Festival will be overflowing with musical influences and intersections that tell stories showing how new and traditional chamber music merge and emerge into new work.

Nearly 100 artists from (literally) around the world will converge in Portland for one of the biggest and most-recognized chamber music festivals in the nation. Ranging from Purcell, Debussy, Ravel, and Crumb, to exciting contemporary composers Reena Esmail, Kenji Bunch, and Andy Akiho, there’s a range of styles and sounds for any music lover to enjoy!

Who doesn’t love saxophone? For the “American Voices,” influenced by jazz and folk styles Sinta Saxophone Quartet with violin and piano will soar.

This year’s festival is truly citywide with concerts at The Reser in Beaverton, Alberta Rose Theatre in the NE Arts District, Reed College in the southeast to midtown at Portland State, and The Armory at Portland Center Stage. And that’s just the mainstage concerts. Community concerts range from Milwaukie to the University of Portland, Gresham, and up to Vancouver, Washington with our friends at Vancouver Symphony Orchestra! (Oh, and we’ll be doing POP-UP performances around town on the new mobile concert truck, SoundsTruck!)

Audiences this summer will enjoy performances by Brentano String Quartet, Sandbox Percussion, Sinta Saxophone Quartet, and Viano String Quartet, and our talented 2022 Protégé Artists alongside celebrated international and Northwest musicians, and festival-favorites!

Catch Andy Akiho’s percussion phenom with Sandbox Percussion for its Portland premiere!

Portland will experience Portland’s Andy Akiho’s TWO-TIME Grammy-nominated and Pulitzer Prize-finalist, the percussively spectacular Seven Pillars, Dawn Upshaw, and the Brentanos’ haunting new Dido Reimagined, and the world premiere of Portlander David Schiff’s Vineyard Rhythms, that explores the seasonal beauty of Sokol Blosser winery.

In all, there are more than 60 events featuring dozens of world-renowned musicians, and stunning young artists, who are playing a vast range of incredible chamber music with us over five weeks.

Kenneth Overton (An African American Requiem) and Ellen Hwangbo in A Journey Beyond Time, combine the human voice with an array of more than 100 instruments to explore the heart and soul of Black American spirituals.
