Timing is Everything: Start Planning Now for a 2023 Home Remodel

This modern farmhouse kitchen in Oregon City took thoughtful planning to get all the intricate details right.
There comes a time when a homeowner looks around their residence and realizes it no longer fits their needs. Maybe they need more space; want to upgrade outdated counters, cabinets, appliances, and fixtures; or create a floor plan that's more customized to their family's lifestyle. Regardless of the reason, a remodeling project allows homeowners to create the home of their dreams in the space they love.
While remodeling a home is an exciting experience – it's also a major project with many moving parts. Depending on the scope and complexity of the project, the construction phase alone can take 3 to 9 months or more to complete. To ensure a successful outcome, homeowners must have a realistic understanding of the steps, process, and timeline involved.
Planning is paramount. For homeowners looking to complete a home remodel in 2023, now is the time to start preparing.

With so many decisions involved, the process can seem intimidating. That's where working with a premier design-build firm such as Mountainwood Homes has its benefits. The company remodels and builds custom homes in the Portland, Oregon, and southwest Washington areas. Mountainwood's collaborative "one-stop-shop" approach eliminates the homeowner's need to independently contract with separate designers, architects, contractors, trade partners, and suppliers – optimizing the value and potential of each project.
"The remodeling process doesn't start with demolition and construction; there is a lot of upfront planning and different players, schedules, and timetables involved," said Heather Wood, designer and co-owner of Mountainwood Homes. “In the current environment, supply chain disruptions could further extend project timelines. We remind our clients that if they are patient and trust Mountainwood Homes and our process, we can navigate through any issues that may arise."

The 1999 remodeled primary bathroom in Forest Heights features a luxurious walk-in shower, dramatic floor-to-ceiling porcelain slabs on the wall, and a freestanding bathtub to soak in the views.
Mountainwood Homes' proven process begins with a site visit to the client's home, where a project developer will listen to the homeowner's dreams, wish list, timeline, and budget. "If we mutually decide it's a good fit to move forward, we sign a design agreement, and our team gets to work," said Wood. "We involve an interior designer and a CAD (computer-aided design) designer to take measurements of your home, draw up your existing layout, and figure out some new possibilities. We prepare 3D renderings so you can envision your home with the improvements."
Next is the design presentation between the homeowner, design team, and project developer. Through this highly collaborative process, a winning floor plan is decided upon. Then comes the fun part: the design process.
"This is where our talented and award-winning designers help bring all the details together," said Wood. "While you're working with our designer, the rest of the Mountainwood Homes team is working behind the scenes to order materials, turn your plan into construction drawings, submit to engineering, and turn in for permits."
Finally, construction begins, and that's where the homeowner can see their dream come together.
