Portland Playhouse, the undisputed home of Christmas theatre in Portland, invites you to share the magic of the season once again with their production of the most beloved Christmas story of all time - Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

For many, attending a performance of A Christmas Carol is a cherished, unmissable winter ritual and a central part of their holiday festivities. If you’ve not yet made it one of your family’s traditions, why not try it this year?

Filled with costumes, carols, imagination, and music this heartwarmingly haunting tale of love and redemption delivers a hearty dose of Christmas magic for the whole family. Join Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, Marley’s ghost, and other treasured characters in this transformative musical wonderland as Scrooge embarks on a thrilling journey towards friendship and love, guided by three ghostly spirits.

This traditional tale is surprisingly staged and contemporarily cast. Full of wonder and joy, it is overflowing with good cheer. So, can you really say you’ve done Christmas in Portland if you’ve not witnessed this captivating tale for yourself? If you’re asking us, you can’t! Starting with performances of A Christmas Carol masks are optional, but recommended, at Portland Playhouse. 


We recognize there are some members of our community who will find it difficult to safely enjoy their Playhouse experience in a mask-optional environment. Therefore, a number of performances for A Christmas Carol are designated masks required. Please click here to see the performances that require masks.

  • Masks are always available upon request - just ask us;
  • Proof of vaccination or negative test not required; 
  • Enhanced cleaning and sanitation of all spaces; 
  • Air purification systems are present throughout the building;
