Embracing the joy of cycling on Portland’s Esplanade, Carey Booth (on left) and her friend Carter Kennedy (right) choose Kerr Bikes & Boats’ side-by-side rental as their favorite way to explore.

Carey Booth is on a mission to bring the joy of cycling back into the lives of her friends and loved ones facing health setbacks or age-related mobility challenges. Her passion for outdoor adventure led her to Kerr Bikes & Boats, a social enterprise supporting Albertina Kerr. This local nonprofit provides programs and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health challenges.

All set for a scenic adventure: Carey Booth (on left) and her friend Carter Kennedy (right) enjoy catching up while exploring the city on a side-by-side rental from Kerr Bikes & Boats.

One of her closest friends, Carter Kennedy, has health challenges drastically affecting his mobility. The duo had previously explored Portland on bikes, but those moments had become distant memories. Determined to restore their joyful outings, Carey employed the perfect solution—the side-by-side cycle at Kerr Bikes & Boats.

The side-by-side is a two-person recumbent bike, allowing riders to pedal together while connected by a metal platform. This innovative design facilitates accessible communication and a sense of togetherness throughout the ride. For individuals like Carter, who struggle with traditional bikes due to limited motor skills or balance issues, this bike becomes a gateway to the joy of cycling.

Carey and Carter have embarked on unforgettable, scenic rides along the Eastbank Esplanade, including reconnecting with friends and indulging in ice cream along their route. Carey explains what makes the side-by-side perfect: "Only one person needs to steer, and I can pedal both of us on the flat and the downhill. However, I need help on the uphill, and Carter can do just enough." Reflecting on her experience, Carey notes it's about connection. "Feeling like you're with someone rather than trailing behind is the best part," she says.

Being a trusted co-pilot offers her friends and family a relaxing and enjoyable experience. She has extended her cycling adventures to include her 88-year-old mother, Sandy Madsen. "She loves it," Carey says. The side-by-side also caught the attention of Lucille Pierce, a vibrant 102-year-old member of Carey's yoga class. Embracing life's opportunities with a resounding "yes," Lucille joined Carey for a momentous ride, becoming Kerr Bikes & Boats' most senior client.

The inclusive nature of Kerr Bikes & Boats offerings allows people of all ages and abilities to participate. To increase cycling access for people with mobility challenges, Kerr Bikes & Boats, in partnership with the Portland Bureau of Transportation and Nike, operates Adaptive BIKETOWN

As one of only a few bike-share programs nationwide to include adaptive bikes, Kerr Bikes & Boats' location in the red shed north of OMSI offers free parking, a safe place to store mobility devices, and proximity to the Esplanade and Willamette River.
