A World of Art for Your Walls at the Portland Fine Print Fair

Learn what to expect at the Portland Art Museum’s annual opportunity to peruse and purchase fine art prints.

Presented by Portland Art Museum December 14, 2023

The Portland Fine Print Fair is the premier event in the Northwest for print lovers and collectors. For one weekend only, fourteen top galleries and print publishers will gather in the Fields Ballroom at the Portland Art Museum to sell original prints. The event takes place January 26 - 28, 2024.

We asked Mary Weaver Chapin, Ph.D., Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Museum, for some insight on the Fair, now in its eleventh year.

Mary, what was the Museum’s motivation in starting the Print Fair eleven years ago?

Great question! Our goal was to make museum-quality prints available to the Portland public by gathering print galleries and publishers from around the region and the world. The response was wonderful, so we kept it going. It is now equal parts Art Fair, educational event, and celebration of the graphic arts.

What is your favorite aspect of the Print Fair?

First and foremost, I love watching people connect with the art, whether it is a first-time buyer making an initial purchase or a seasoned collector who finds just the right addition to their collection. Naturally, as a print curator, I adore the opportunity to browse thousands of prints in one weekend. Every year I purchase art from the Fair for the permanent collection of the Portland Art Museum, so I am working, too!

What kind of art will I see?

Just about everything! Each gallery and publisher specializes in a different era. In just a few steps, you can view exciting contemporary Irish etchings next to harmonious Japanese wood blocks of the 1700 and 1800s, followed by stunning work by Native American artists, and subtle work of the French impressionists, next to lithographs inspired by tattoo designs. It is a whirlwind of the old and the new, the local and international. We have fourteen exhibitors this year, each with a unique focus—visit our website for a complete list of exhibitors and links to their web pages with images and descriptions.

How much do prints cost?

Prints have the advantage of being among the most affordable original art on the market. At the Fair, you will find work starting around $100 and reaching the thousands. The prices are all clearly marked; some dealers put the prices on the mat or a list, but don’t hesitate to ask if you can’t find the price.

Ok, we’ve got to ask: are the galleries and publishers snooty?

Ha! Great question, and the answer is a resounding “no.” Our exhibitors were all chosen for their outstanding work as well as their friendly, approachable manner. They love prints and are happy to share their knowledge. Introduce yourself and ask questions! The publishers are also accomplished fine art printers. Be sure to stop by Aspinwall Editions, Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts, Mullowney Printing Company, and Stoney Road Press to talk shop with the folks who print the work. They have a wealth of knowledge and lots of stories to share.

A gathering like this deserves a party. Anything planned?

On Friday, January 26, we offer a sneak peek of the Print Fair to buy and browse before it opens to the public. It begins at 6:00 p.m., and there is always a line of people eager for the doors to open. The benefit preview is a fundraiser for the Department of Prints and Drawings, and tickets can be purchased on our website.

Anything else we should know to plan our visit?

For security, no art may be brought into the Fair, and we ask you to use the free coat/bag check when you enter. Please keep all food and drink confined to the lobby. Other than that, come as you are and have fun exploring the Portland Fine Print Fair!
