Quixote Nuevo: A Modern Tale of Love and Courage
Kicking off the final four plays in the 23-24 season is "Quixote Nuevo," a reimagining of Miguel de Cervantes' timeless masterpiece by Octavio Solis. Directed by Lisa Portes, this production breathes new life into the story of Don Quixote with a modern twist. Set in the fictional town of La Plancha, Texas, a brilliant professor battling dementia envisions himself as Cervantes' iconic hero, tilting at border patrol drones instead of windmills. This adaptation not only pays homage to the original but also spotlights Tejano culture, celebrating life, love, and the indomitable human spirit. With vibrant Spanish-infused music and language, "Quixote Nuevo" promises an evening of groundbreaking storytelling that retains the heart of the classic.
“Brilliant … it's rare that you come across a new adaptation of a classic text that feels groundbreaking and new while still retaining the heart of the original.” – BroadwayWorld

Nassim: A Theatrical Experiment in Language and Connection
Following closely is "Nassim," a unique production by Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour. A Bush Theatre (UK) and Nassim Soleimanpour production, this theatrical experiment invites a new, unrehearsed local performer to join the playwright on stage each night. The script, unseen in a sealed box, unfolds in a touchingly autobiographical yet powerfully universal narrative. "Nassim" is a striking demonstration of how language, both divisive and unifying, shapes our lives. Soleimanpour's creation speaks eloquently of living and working in a place with a language not your own, fostering empathy and connection in the process.
“Soleimanpour makes a quietly persuasive case for theatre’s special power to foster empathy.” – The London Evening Herald

Coriolanus: Shakespeare's Tragedy in a Modern Light
For enthusiasts of classical literature, "Coriolanus" offers a modern take on William Shakespeare's rare and unique tragedy. Translated by Sean San José and directed by Rosa Joshi, this production, produced in partnership with upstart crow collective and Play On Shakespeare, explores themes of famine, political unrest, and the fragility of democracy. With a dynamic female and non-binary ensemble, the play's muscular, movement-focused staging breathes new life into the Bard's language while highlighting the timeless core of the story. "Coriolanus" is a powerful reminder that democracy is fragile and always worth defending.
“Coriolanus is a truly great work of theatrical art, one that T.S. Eliot thought better than Hamlet … a masterpiece.” – The Wall Street Journal

Clyde’s: A Delicious Comedy with Heartwarming Flavor
Closing the theatrical journey is "Clyde’s" by Lynn Nottage, a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner. Directed by Chip Miller, this delicious comedy serves up laughs, redemption, and restorative justice. The story revolves around the formerly incarcerated kitchen staff at Clyde’s navigating their new lives on the outside while striving to create the perfect sandwich. With loveable characters, big dreams, and a heartwarming narrative, "Clyde’s" is a Tony Award nominee for Best Play, 2022, offering a laugh riot with real substance.
“A laugh riot with real meat on its bones.” – The New York Times
