Is Love More Than Real?
At Portland Playhouse, the stage is set to thrill you with a groundbreaking revival production of Passing Strange, a Tony Award-winning musical originally brought to life on Broadway, and later, as a Spike Lee film. It promises an unforgettable experience that blends the electrifying energy of rock music with soulful ballads as a backdrop to the journey a young Black musician takes as he searches for identity and meaning.
Passing Strange, set in the wild era of the ‘70s and ‘80s, will take you from the gospel-infused streets of South Central LA to an artistic & relaxed Amsterdam to the anarchic punk scene of Berlin - without ever leaving your seat. Here, our protagonist, Youth, portrayed by the brilliant Charles Grant, embarks on a journey that confronts themes of race, art, and rebellion along the way.
Directed by Rodney Hicks, this revival of a cult-classic is a celebration of artistry and authenticity, featuring a stellar all-Portland cast including Delphon ‘DJ’ Curtis Jr, Charles Grant, Jelani Kee, Jasonica Moore, LaRhonda Steele, Lauren Steele, and Andrea Vernae. Their performances, backed by a live band led by Music Director & pianist Kennedy Verrett, are set to transport audiences to a place where music and storytelling merge to create magic.
As Passing Strange takes you through a whirlwind of sex, drugs & rock n' roll, it does more than just tell a story; it invites you on a journey of healing, inspiration, and, most importantly, joy. Don't let this opportunity pass you by. From April 17 to May 26, Passing Strange promises to be a production that Portlanders will remember for years to come.
Book your tickets now for an adventure that transcends the “real” where you'll discover that sometimes, the most profound truths are found in the most unlikely places.
