The Faces of Gastroenterology

“For people under 50, death from colorectal cancers is now #1 for men and #2 for women,” said Dr. Ross Vyhmeister of The Oregon Clinic. “Colorectal cancers are generally not top of mind for younger healthy people, but we’re seeing the disease in people with all kinds of lifestyles and health histories,” adds Dr. Jessica Haraga. “The good news is colonoscopy is the most effective screening in preventing cancer and for early diagnosis if it’s already present.”
The Oregon Clinic Gastroenterology works hard to raise awareness of colorectal cancer and the importance of screening, making sure Oregonians know the new nationally recommended age for screening starts at 45. “We don’t know what is causing more colorectal cancer in younger Americans. But we do know it’s important people get their first screening at 45, or younger if they have a family history of colorectal cancers,” says Dr. Ajay Singhvi.
Dr. Tiffany Lambrou knows many patients feel some anxiety leading up to a colonoscopy. “Our team works together to make sure every patient is comfortable and supported,” she said. “It’s a personal topic, and we try to keep the entire experience light and low stress from start to finish.”
