This phenomena occurs when there’s a new or full moon with its distance from the Earth at its closest,  causing significant gravitational pull resulting in monster tides.  This provides a unique opportunity to witness the incredible power of Mother Nature while creating a stunning backdrop for photography and exploration.

Where to Stay

The Central Oregon Coast is the perfect home base to witness the awe-inspiring power of the King Tides. Plenty to do, wonderful award-winning restaurants, and plenty of comfortable lodging options.  Lincoln City’s  Surfland Hotel and Coho Oceanfront Lodge are fantastic overnight accommodations that both offer free complimentary breakfast as well as oceanfront rooms with panoramic views of the Pacific situated on a high bluff making for the optimum viewing experience.  Further down in Newport, the Inn at Nye Beach is also another amazing option which also offers delivered breakfast to your room and offers direct beach access.

Near 15th street beach access in Lincoln City.

Post King Tides Surprise

The King Tides are always immediately followed by the extreme opposite of a Minus Tide.  This provides the unique opportunity to explore parts of the beach that would normally be submerged underwater.  This often unveils rare hidden treasures of the ocean floor and offers unique opportunities for tide pooling, beachcombing, and exploring marine life.  But always ensure you are keeping track of when the tide will return since like King Tides, safety should always be your top priority.   Keep track with NOAA’s tide schedule.

Picture Perfect

Get your selfie on.  Dramatic weather, diverse landscapes,  abundant wildlife, and amazing sights.  From Siletz Bay to Depoe Bay.  From Lincoln City to Newport, so much to capture and so much to take in.  Wild winter storms bring with them massive crashing waves against the shoreline which is a thrilling experience to witness.  When the coast is clear, the sun is the brightest it gets all year which in turn creates the most breathtaking sunsets like this one from the Oceanhouse in Newport.   Don’t forget your binoculars!

Keep It Safe

During King Tides and severe storms in general, it is best to keep safety top of mind. The US Coast Guard warns that sneaker waves during periods of calm, that often effortlessly move large pieces of driftwood and other objects out to sea, are a substantial threat to those on the beach. Protect yourself, family and pets by avoiding low-lying coastal areas and obeying beach closures if there are any.  And as tempting as it may be to watch up close, keeping your distance will be your best bet.
