A New Chapter Begins on the Oregon Coast

This iconic hotel in Newport, Oregon, has a major facelift, but its roots remain as a literary sanctuary with jaw-dropping views.

Presented by VIP Hospitality June 16, 2025

Overlooking the majestic Pacific Ocean, Hotel Sylvia welcomes a new era of travelers with literary hearts and curious minds. Formerly known as the Sylvia Beach Hotel, this iconic coastal retreat has been fully reimagined as a modern, thoughtfully designed oceanfront hotel in the heart of the Nye Beach district in Newport—offering guests a uniquely creative place to rest, recharge, and be inspired.

Paying tribute to Sylvia Beach, the legendary bookseller and publisher who opened Shakespeare and Company in 1920s Paris, the hotel embodies her spirit of connection, literature, and fearless exploration. Every element of the guest experience has been thoughtfully curated to celebrate stories—on the page, in the design, and in the stay itself.

Rooms That Tell a Story

Each of the hotel’s 22 newly renovated guest rooms offers its own immersive literary experience.  Seven of those will be dedicated to specific authors, including two new authors, Maya Angelou and C.S. Lewis, along with the existing rooms celebrating Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, Ernest Hemingway, William Shakespeare, and Alice Walker. The other rooms will reflect literary themes, among them, fantasy, literary nonfiction, and romance.

Custom-designed wallpaper and décor that interprets each genre’s unique essence. Room types offer a variety of views ranging from oceanfront hotel rooms, partial ocean-view rooms, and garden-facing patio rooms within the charming Nye Beach community. All rooms feature private bathrooms, original artwork, bookshelves, and details designed for inspiration and comfort.  Guest rooms will not be equipped with telephones or televisions, and a few select rooms on the ground floor will allow well-behaved small dogs for a nightly fee.

Communal Spaces

Guests of Hotel Sylvia can relax, read, or gather in a number of spaces throughout the hotel.  The lobby lounge is lined with bookshelves and anchored by a gas fireplace—perfect for morning coffee, evening reads, or quiet conversation. On the top floor, the renovated attic offers a serene retreat with writing desks and cozy seating, ideal for journaling or diving into your next creative project.  Outside, the oceanfront deck features gas firepits and comfortable lounge seating, creating a place to enjoy sunset views and fresh sea air. The top floor of the hotel houses the James Joyce Library, a quiet attic space to read and write.

Food & Drink

With sweeping ocean vistas as its backdrop, Café Sylvia invites both hotel guests and locals to indulge in a breakfast experience like no other. The café’s ambiance—a gentle blend of coastal charm and modern elegance—sets the stage for a truly memorable start to your day.  The café serves freshly baked croissants, house-made crepes, and egg scrambles made with locally sourced fresh ingredients.  Espresso drinks in the lobby are complimentary to hotel guests.  The gift shop will offer snacks, canned beer, wine, and cocktails for guests to enjoy, including on the oceanfront patio.  The hotel will also feature Hemingway’s Happy Hour package, which will include 2 Straightway Cocktails from our selection along with a delectable charcuterie board.
