Zupan’s Markets: 50 Years and Still Going Strong

The Portland institution continues its celebration of community, quality, and local flavor beyond its golden anniversary.

On the shelves at Zupan’s Markets, plenty of products have aged to perfection—think Parmigiano Reggiano matured for 24 months, or wines sourced from coveted vintage years. And just like these delicacies, Zupan’s Markets itself has only improved with age. Even as the official festivities for their milestone 50th anniversary have wrapped up, the celebration of community, tradition, and gourmet excellence continues.

Founder John Zupan’s journey in the grocery business started humbly as a courtesy clerk at Portland’s Sheridan Fruit Co., evolving over years spent refining his skills at Fred Meyer. In 1975, John’s dream finally came true with the opening of his own market.

Today, that legacy lives on under his son, Mike Zupan, who grew up stacking shelves and helping customers. Mike carries forward his father’s passion, combining exceptional ingredients and unmatched service to create a destination market that inspires home cooks and gourmet enthusiasts alike.

“For more than half a century, Zupan’s Markets has been more than a store—it’s a cornerstone of our neighborhoods,” says Mike Zupan, President and CEO. “Our anniversary was a special moment to pause and celebrate, but every day we continue to honor the community that has supported us from the beginning.”

Throughout 2025, Zupan’s marked its golden year with a host of memorable promotions and product releases, including:

  • 5 on the 5th, showcasing monthly curated deals on local favorites and staples.

  • A limited-edition 50th Anniversary EVOO, a collaboration with Durant Olive Mill presented in a commemorative bottle.

  • The beloved Z Cookie evolved into a take-and-bake pack and a decadent new ice cream flavor featuring Belgian chocolate cookie crumbles.

  • BubbleZ, a festive champagne tasting event that made the holidays sparkle in November at the Burnside and Lake Oswego locations.

But Zupan’s Markets has always been more than its special events—it's about the enduring quality and commitment to its customers every day.

Eat Well. Love Your Food. Put Taste First.

These principles drive Zupan’s careful selection of products, from Dungeness crab cakes and Kurobuta pork to freshly squeezed juices and housemade guacamole. Quality and flavor always lead the way.

Big Dinners in the Breezeway

Since 2012, the Lake Oswego location’s charming breezeway has hosted summer dinners, bringing friends together over multi-course, al fresco meals—truly a local tradition.

Shop & Sip

As pioneers of Portland’s wine culture, Zupan’s introduced its first dedicated wine steward in 1991. With more than 1,000 wines from local Oregon pinots to renowned global labels, guests can enjoy sipping while shopping.

Full-Service Floral

Inspired by European markets, Zupan’s floral departments create stunning, handcrafted arrangements perfect for everyday enjoyment or special moments.

Waste Not

Sustainability is at Zupan’s core, demonstrated by partnerships with Urban Gleaners and Sunshine Division. Together, they help ensure unsold produce and goods go directly to community members in need.
