Worth a Toast

Experience a different kind of wine region during Fall Release weekend in Walla Walla, Washington

Presented by Walla Walla Wine By Cara Strickland October 7, 2025

When you arrive in Walla Walla, Washington in early November, you may notice a buzz of excitement in the air. Depending on the year, the rush of harvest might not be over quite yet—many hands helping the grapes make their way inside to begin their journey toward wine. But even if the vines are preparing for well-earned winter rest, that excitement likely has something to do with a long-awaited annual event: Fall Release Weekend, when doors open across the Valley and guests can discover wines that winemakers have been eager to pour for the public for the first time.

Welcome to Fall Release weekend (November 7-9th in 2025). After years of care and a long wait in the cellars, you can be among the first to taste these newly unveiled red wines.

When you think about Walla Walla Valley reds, you might imagine Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. While you’ll find these plentiful, those are far from the only red wines in town. The Walla Walla Valley has always been known for innovation, both in what kinds of grapes people plant and how they choose to make the wine those grapes produce. Over 40 varietals are currently grown in the Valley–95% of those are red grapes. You’ll find everything from Aglianico to Zinfandel, and everything in between.

Besides these fresh reds, you might also have a chance to meet the people whose alchemy brought the grapes from vine to a crimson swirl in your glass. Walla Walla might be a world class wine destination, but no amount of accolades have changed the relaxed, welcoming vibe of the wine community.

It’s one thing to drink a great red wine, but it’s another still to drink it in the company of the people who tended the vines, harvested the grapes, then shepherded it until it was just right, ready to bottle. It’s likely that you’ll be able to meet winemakers and other members of their teams while you sip. Now that’s an unforgettable experience.

There’s nowhere quite like the Walla Walla Valley, and autumn is a particular show-off. The mornings are crisp, fall colors on full display, with the golden light hitting the grapevines so they glow. Look up and you’ll see the majesty of the Blue Mountains, a dramatic contrast to the wheat fields and vineyards below. It’s easy to forget that all this is an easy four-hour drive from Portland.

There’s a certain magic about going out to the wineries to taste, but be sure to leave time to wander around downtown Walla Walla. Good wine attracts good food (and good coffee). Grab a latte and a pastry or start your day with something more substantial. The most challenging part will be figuring out how many meals you can fit into your stay.

Whether you’re in the mood for Mexican, French, Middle Eastern, or Southern cuisine, there’s a spot for you (and lots of others, too). Once fueled, you can check out local shops, set off on an outdoor adventure, or keep right on tasting.

While you can taste wine throughout the year, and it’s well worth the visit, Fall Release offers special events that can take your experience to the next level. Whether it’s a winemaker dinner at a winery or local restaurant, a taste through the vintages of a particular varietal, or something as simple as a great party,

Fall Release gives you the chance to add a little something extra to your trip.

Whenever you come, you’ll likely notice that there is something special about the Walla Walla Valley. The tight-knit community and relaxed vibe paired with diverse varietals and expert winemaking create a haven for wine lovers and the wine curious.  Fall Release might be your first visit, but chances are, it won’t be your last.
