This November and December, share the joy and magic of the season with your loved ones at Portland Playhouse. Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol returns to the North Portland theatre company November 25th through December 31st, bringing a dose of holiday soul-nourishment for the whole family. Directed by Playhouse Producing Director Charles Grant, this year’s production brings fresh voices and staging to the timeless holiday story of transformation, compassion, and heart – ensuring that it continues to surprise, delight, and deeply resonate with audiences today.
At the center of this heart-filled and musically-infused production is the miserly but deeply human Ebenezer Scrooge, played this year for the first time by the dynamic and charismatic La’Tevin Alexander. Visited on Christmas Eve by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley (Jimmy Garcia), Scrooge embarks on a night-long journey of remembrance and redemption, guided by visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past (Delphon “DJ” Curtis Jr.), Present (Claire Rigsby), and Future (Garcia, again). Michael Feldman, Danielle Barker, Quinci Freeman-Lytle, and Emmanuel Davis round out the adult ensemble, as the small company of performers transforms from character to character before our eyes. Joined by a rotating Youth cast, the entire ensemble also performs all of the instrumental and vocal music throughout the show, under the direction of DeReau K. Farrar.
Why is the story of A Christmas Carol so enduring?
Dickens’ tale addresses some of humanity’s most vital, enduring themes – empathy versus indifference, memory and regret, hope and renewal – all of which remain profoundly relevant in 2025. Through Scrooge’s encounters with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, audiences are invited not only into a ghostly festive fantasia but into the real, human drama of change and community. Many theatres around the country highlight this piece as their “official start to the holiday season” for good reason.

Portland Playhouse performs a rich adaptation of the novella by Rick Lombardo, including original lyrics and music co-composed with Anna Lackaff. The production deftly balances the humanity of the story with spectacle and magic, resulting in a Christmas Carol that brings awe, wonder, and meaning for the theatre-goers of all backgrounds and ages. Visiting the Playhouse can be a particularly special way for loved ones to make holiday memories together, as the snow and fog swirl, spirits magically appear, and carols joyfully echo throughout the building. At a time when coming together matters more than ever, A Christmas Carol offers a heart-filling evening to cherish.
