Wine Country is Always in Season

Walla Walla, Washington is the winter escape you didn’t know you needed

Presented by Walla Walla Wine December 15, 2025

When you’re thinking about winter getaways, you’re going to want to put Walla Walla, Washington on your list. There’s no need to limit yourself to any one season, each one offers adventure, relaxation, and of course, great food and wine. The grapevines might be taking their yearly rest, but the town is wide awake.

Early December brings Holiday Barrel events, and with it some hustle and bustle, but as the month and year wind down and the calendar creeps toward spring, you’ll find a more relaxed pace, perfect for sitting around a fire, taking the time to luxuriate over a tasting and ask all your questions.

You’ll want to check hours and make reservations, but you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting a seat at whichever restaurant suits your mood.

Get yourself a glass of full-bodied red and cozy up to a winery firepit (or a tasting room fireplace). Though the winemakers are hard at work all year, the pace isn’t as taxing during the winter months, if you’re lucky, you might get a chance to chat with one.

The first step in any getaway is your home base. Luckily, Walla Walla has a variety of varied experiences to choose from. Downtown, check out the mid-century modern, boutique vibes of The FINCH, or settle into the historic luxury of the Marcus Whitman, both within easy walking distance of downtown dining and tasting rooms (and both with communal fireplaces). A little further afield, you’ll find high-end lodging experiences like the spacious Eritage Resort and intimate The Barn B&B. Whatever your style, there’s a place with your name on it.

Though you can eat, wine taste, and enjoy a glass or bottle, often without leaving your chosen home away from home, chances are, you’ll be ready to venture out soon. You’re never far from local wine, but you’ll also find a wide array of dining options, whether you’re craving French or Italian, Mexican or Southern cuisine, you’re in luck.

January and February bring their share of events to enhance your trip. Southside Snow Day, on January 31, 2026, celebrates the wineries of Walla Walla’s Southside with tastings, food, and bright, 80s snowsuits. While each year’s event is hosted at a different winery, you may find yourself snowshoeing through a vineyard, roasting marshmallows for s’mores or singing karaoke at an after-party downtown, it’s always a fun and lively event.

Pair your wine with music during January’s annual four day Chamber Music Winter Festival.

This combination of free and premium events allows you to hear beautiful classical music in unexpected and intimate venues, creating an unforgettable experience.

February is a month-long celebration of the Walla Walla food scene, with Walla Walla Restaurant Month. Participating restaurants - and some wineries - offer special menus in three price-points, designed to showcase their unique flavors. The whole event kicks off with a food and short film event at the Gesa Power House Theater on January 31, 2026.

While the wine will always be the star of the show, don’t sleep on Walla Walla beer. February’s Brewfest is the perfect opportunity to try a wide range of local offerings.

If you’re ready for some outdoor adventure, you’re in luck. Snowshoe, cross-country ski or sled within an easy drive. If a guided adventure sounds like your speed, you can check out Adventure Fit for a snowshoeing daytrip (and yes, there is a wine-tasting option). Just over an hour away from Walla Walla, you’ll find Bluewood Resort in the Blue Mountains, which offers a wide range of experiences, from beginner to expert skiers and snowboarders, as well as cozy fires and dining options for apres ski.

Whatever your winter getaway style, there’s something for you in Walla Walla, Washington.
