Rainy Day at Hult Center

Winter in Oregon's mountains and coast delivers a different experience than summer—quieter trails, steaming hot springs, and the kind of atmosphere that invites you to slow down and take it all in. It's an ideal time to explore waterfalls, hot springs, and unique communities.

Salt Creek Falls in the Winter

Oakridge and Westfir

The neighboring mountain towns of Oakridge and Westfir are surrounded by the Willamette National Forest, making them convenient bases for winter exploration. The area features several Sno-Parks within easy driving distance, including Salt Creek Falls (20 miles southeast) and Gold Lake (25 miles out). Waldo Lake Sno-Park attracts snowmobilers, while Willamette Pass Resort offers downhill and cross-country skiing.

After spending time outdoors, you can soak in the natural pools at McCredie Hot Springs. The 3 Legged Crane Pub and Brewhouse serves comfort food and local beer in a relaxed setting.

McKenzie River

Small communities dot the McKenzie River corridor, creating a peaceful mountain atmosphere. The McKenzie River Trail runs for 26 miles alongside the water, passing waterfalls and misty forest. Belknap Hot Springs features a hot springs-fed pool at their rustic lodge or you can explore Terwilliger Hot Springs for a more natural experience. The Hoodoo Ski area is under an hour's drive from most McKenzie River accommodations.

Sahalie Falls in the Snow

Eugene and Springfield

The Willamette Valley occasionally sees snow, but even without it, the season offers plenty of moody weather to cozy up in. Browse used bookstores, record shops, or antique stores. Play around in an arcade bar or head to a museum for indoor adventures. If you want to head to higher elevations for snow, Oakridge and the McKenzie River area are both easy day trips.

Heceta Head Lighthouse

Florence

In winter, Florence shifts from wild, restless seas to mild sunbreaks that light up the dunes. No matter what the day brings, the experience feels like a Goonies-style adventure written just for you. Enjoy storm watching from the comfort of your hotel room. On clear days, visit Heceta Head Lighthouse or the Cape Perpetua overlook, where you can also spot whales in December and March. The coastal mountains also offer mushroom foraging opportunities. Pack layers and rain gear, and you’ll be ready to chase adventure wherever it leads.

Historic Old Town Florence puts you within walking distance of charming shops and restaurants. Staying outside the city core provides excellent beach access and ocean views.
