Five Reasons to Visit a Small Seafood Festival with Big Flavor on the Tillamook Bay
Need an outing after the long winter days? The Oregon coast is always a draw, but a festival celebrating authentically Oregon seafood and spirits is an even better reason to make the short drive to Garibaldi. About an hour and a half from Portland, the free Port of Garibaldi Seafood & Spirits Festival returns May 15-16. Bring a friend, bring your kids, bring your dog, and come to enjoy a weekend of fresh seafood, regionally crafted spirits, and waterfront views.
1. Sample Seafood Straight from the Harbor
The festival tent overlooks Tillamook Bay, where the local fishing fleet brings in its catch. Local merchants offer dock-to-plate, delicious dishes. You can buy fresh seafood to take home and try tasty dishes such as smoked salmon dip, crab cakes, clam chowder, crab melts, fish tacos, fried calamari, and the festival favorite: oyster on the half shell. Demonstrations throughout the weekend include oyster-shucking and fish-filleting.
2. Catch the “Spirits” with Regional Distilleries and Wineries
Try a tasting or a specialty cocktail from several area purveyors, including local winery Garibaldi Cellars. There are handcrafted, artisanal spirits from Oregon distilleries, including Stillweather Spirits and Just Rum. If you’re looking for something to keep your energy going, Garibaldi’s own local roaster, Pacific Edge Espresso, will be serving coffee and hot drinks.
3. Breathe the Salt Air and Know How Lucky You Are to Live Here
The large event tent overlooks the harbor, so you can watch the local boats go by and the changing tides and water. It’s a breathtaking view. The tent is warm and cozy, but you can also sit outside at picnic tables and fire pits to take in the scenery.
4. It’s Small and We Like It That Way
This is a festival where you can actually talk to the people who catch the fish or make the spirits. Lines are shorter, crowds are lighter, and dogs on a leash are welcome. Families can play lawn games. You can stroll down the main street to explore unique shops and restaurants. One popular shop is Spunky’s Crystals, where you’ll find rocks, geodes, and of course, crystals.
5. Come for a Day Trip or Make It a Weekend
The festival includes live music both evenings. Park your RV or stay in one of Garibaldi’s hotels to explore the area. Visit the Garibaldi Maritime Museum, ride the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad, and try some delicious ice cream at nearby Tillamook Creamery.
Whether you visit for the afternoon or stay the night, the Port of Garibaldi Seafood & Spirits Festival is a perfect excuse to experience one of the Oregon Coast’s most authentic fishing villages. For more information, visit portofgaribaldi.org.
