From Lottery Tickets to Coastal Treasures
Not every Oregon Lottery ticket ends in a jackpot, but they all contribute to something bigger. In fact, more than 90 percent of Lottery revenue is returned to players as prizes, with the rest helping fund programs and places that matter across the state. From state parks to historic preservation, those Scratch-its and Keno games quietly shape the experiences at some of Oregon’s most iconic places.
Nowhere is that impact more tangible than along the central Oregon Coast.
A Stronger Foundation for Outdoor Getaways
Tucked into a forested canyon just north of Newport, Beverly Beach State Park is a favorite basecamp for coastal adventures. Campsites sit beneath towering trees, with Spencer Creek winding through and easy access to the ocean just beyond the bridge.
While the scenery does the initial work of drawing visitors in, it’s the infrastructure that keeps the experience comfortable and accessible. Lottery funding has helped support essential improvements like electrical upgrades, paving, and restroom enhancements—not flashy additions, but the kind that define a stay. After all, even the most dedicated outdoor enthusiast can appreciate a hot shower, clean facilities, and a well-maintained site after a day of exploration.
While Beverly Beach may often book up in peak season, its upgrades reflect something broader: a statewide commitment to ensuring Oregon’s state park campgrounds offer a reliable, comfortable foundation for getting outside.
Preserving a Piece of Coastal History
A few miles south, another Lottery-supported effort tells a different kind of story—one rooted in preservation rather than overnight stays.
The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, built in 1871, stands as Newport’s oldest structure and the only wooden lighthouse remaining on the Oregon Coast. Weathered by salt air and time, it recently underwent a significant restoration to stabilize and protect the building for future generations.
Lottery funds contributed to repairs including structural reinforcement, a new roof, and carefully restored windows and exterior elements. The result is more than cosmetic—it’s a safeguard for a landmark that offers a glimpse into Oregon’s maritime history.
The Bigger Picture Behind the Ticket
Together, these projects highlight how Lottery dollars extend far beyond a single outcome. They help keep campgrounds comfortable, historic sites standing, and beloved destinations accessible year after year.
So whether it’s a weekend on the coast or a walk through local history, those experiences are, in part, powered by everyday play. And while winning is always exciting, it’s worth remembering: even when you don’t, you’re still helping Oregon thrive.
