Where to See World-Class Chamber Music in Portland

There’s something spellbinding, magical even, in being close enough to watch a world-class musician’s deep breath, catch the furrow of a brow, and notice a delicate finger readjustment. That palpably intimate experience is a Friends of Chamber Music specialty, baked into each concert by design.
Chamber music lends itself to these immersive experiences; in lieu of a swelling symphony, a small group of instrumentalists performs sans conductor, instead relying on their chemistry and unspoken communication to play together. Driving the state’s longest continuous chamber music series, Portland’s non-profit chamber music champions bring an expansive and diverse bill of shows, reaching beyond historically prioritized Western European musical traditions to fill the season with an array of gender, ethnic, and cultural expressions.

October 4
Soprano Julia Bullock graces the Lincoln Performance Hall with a voice that seems to well from deep in her soul. Accompanied by Conor Hanick on piano, Bullock will present Olivier Messiaen’s dramatic song cycle “Harawi: Chant d’amour et de mort.”
October 12–13
With decades of international touring and record pressing under their belt, the Takács welcome a new cellist, Mihai Marica, this season. Two nights of shows at Lincoln Performance Hall will both hear Franck’s piano quintet in F minor thanks to guest pianist Jeremy Denk, alongside two rotating pieces. Seeking a preview? October 18
Funkiness and joy shine through all Moanin’ Frogs showcases, as the six saxophonists journey through jazz, pop, and classical genres in a display of contagious energy and stunning collaboration.
November 9 and 10
A string quartet comprised of three brothers and their violist colleague, the Germany-based Schumann Quartet’s technical confidence and openness to respond to individual audiences have landed them recognition as one of the most lauded contemporary string quartets.
Djékady featuring Balla Kouyaté & Mike Block
January 10
A crossover of musical cultures and instruments, the Djékady six-piece brings djembe, talking drum, calabash, vocals, percussion, guitar, bass, and sinter to the stage for dynamic, ever-evolving performances.
January 11 and 12
The Calidore Quartet program reaches from Beethoven to a contemporary piece from 2025 Classical Woman of the Year composer Jessie Montgomery. Each night brings a fully fresh bill for those hoping to catch the quartet twice during their Portland stay.
February 1 and 2
College-friends-turned-piano-trio, the Busch Trio presents two themed nights: Monday’s “Youth, Love and Death” and “Grief, Struggle and Victory” on Tuesday. Known for emotional resonance, the musicians set themselves apart sonically by playing a violin and cello with gut strings rather than modern metal.

February 17
A crowd favorite year over year, British vocal ensemble VOCES8 wears the crown of the world’s top-streaming classical vocal group. Both in a cappella arrangements and in collaborations with leading musicians, the group promises a mesmerizing program.
March 7
Innovation and iteration are the trio’s calling card. With two cellos and a piano as the ingredients, Empire Wild crafts genre-bending and unexpected programs fusing pop, folk, and jazz to craft inventive covers, reinvent classic pieces, and create original tracks.
March 15 and 16
A young string quartet out of Scotland, the group is lauded for a sense of adventure and storytelling they bring to the classics. On Monday, though, they’ll play an original piece inspired by folk music from their homeland.
May 2
Passion and contagious energy come through each performance from the percussion ensemble composed of musicians from Switzerland and Austria. Celebrating ten years as a group, the show promises imaginative programming and unexpected artistry.
May 5
The Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble blends twelve voices into one powerful, goose-bump-worthy performance. This season, the group’s “Paradise” program explores humanity’s longing for utopia, for a glimpse at perfection.

Even more intimate, fundraising dinners invite small groups of 20–30 into Portland’s exquisite, artful homes and miniature performance halls. Consider it dinner and a show, from flamenco paired with tapas to Hawaiian musician Roland Espe opposite Polynesian-inspired bites and tropical libations.
September 27 and November 15
Cellist Hamilton Cheifetz is joined by celebrated local musicians for two pay-what-you-will concerts this fall, a portion of the proceeds supporting PSU’s String Ensemble Community Outreach program.
