For soft, allover waves, point your curling iron toward the ground and wrap small sections around the barrel, starting at the crown and working top to bottom, for a gentler wave than the traditional roll-up-from-the-bottom method.

Local eyebrow expert Monica Ninh advises you loosen the grip on those tweezers and go with a fuller brow for fall. Achieve the look with Anastasia’s Brow Dip in one shade lighter than your natural brow color (never use black).

The fishtail braid looks fancier than the average plait, but it’s even easier to execute. Pull your hair into a low side-ponytail and separate into two sections before pulling a thin strand from the left and wrapping it over the right; then repeat from the other side.

Makeup

A bold red lip is a classic staple sure to pop against that fading summer tan. Find your perfect shade by taking a close look at your skin tone. Warmer undertones should opt for an orange-based red, while cool tones should look to a bluer hue.

In styling, as in life, working smarter pays off. Instead of starting from scratch on day two, take that fishtail braid and wrap it into a simple, loosely pinned bun. The braid will add texture to the bun while keeping the stray pieces in place.

Makeup

Give the traditional smoky eye a vivid update by ditching the charcoal. Instead, opt for shades of autumnal gold, smudged at the lash lines to brighten the eye.
