Weather wise, it’s been a tough week. But for us bird geeks, one surefire cure for the drizzle-induced doldrums is spying some songbirds. And more than 25 species—yellow warblers and rare red-eyed vireos among them—can often be spotted this time of the year at the 2,000-acre Smith and Bybee Natural Wetlands north of town. Buoy your odds of spotting the seasonal denizens with a Metro-led tour of the wetlands going on tomorrow morning.
Urban Legend
Okay, it might be late notice to think about signing up for a bike race. But considering one of the main organizing principles of Sunday’s Urban Assault Ride, which is a sort of two-wheeled mini version of the Amazing Race, is spontaneity (certain portions of the course are secret) and outlandish obstacle courses and other shenanigans—think Big Wheel races and slip-n-slides—that you could never prepare for anyway, why not throw caution to the wind and get after it with all the other free spirits that have made this one of the country’s most popular races. But don’t wait too long, online registration closes at 9:00 p.m.
Get Tracking
Consider this an ongoing summer project. The Forest Park Conservancy All Trails Challenge is back. What’s the challenge, you ask? Oh, only to hike or run (or, possibly, crawl) every single inch of Forest Park’s more than 70 miles of trails (which add up to more than 11,000 feet of accumulated elevation change). Check in with the Conservancy for park maps and a long list of trails you’ll need to bag in order to complete this quest. You’re on your own for the gumption, though.
