Take note bocce ballers: you’ve got a new park to call your own.

Welcome to Elizabeth Caruthers Park. Named after an early pioneer woman who settled in the southern part of the city during the mid-1800s, the green space opened back in June as part of the latest upgrade to the South Waterfront to come courtesy of the North Macadam Urban Renewal Area.

Among its two-acres, you’ll find an urban garden, a spray-n-play water fountain, open lawns, and, oh yeah, a built-in bocce court.

And tonight, the city is pulling out all the stops to spotlight the park’s official debut with tunes from the Peter Krebs Swing Jazz Band, free ice cream, and a rock-climbing wall. Of course, the bocce court will be open, too.

Don’t know jack about bocce? No sweat. Players from the Portland Bocce League will also be present to discuss the game’s finer points.

First lesson: the “jack” is the ball you’ll be aiming for. But I’ll let the experts on hand tonight take it from there.
