Big in Japan

Mercy Corps and Mount Hood Meadows partner up to aid disaster relief efforts.

March 16, 2011

For anyone scratching their head for a way to do some good for those affected by last week’s devastating magnitude 9.0 quake, and ensuing tsunami in Japan, here’s a thought: grab some skis and head to Hood.

With copious spring pow in the forecast and an open window of free time during spring break in which families will likely be headed up to ski, Mount Hood Meadows has just upped the feel good factor on the mountain by announcing two special fundraising nights meant to bolster Mercy Corps’ Japan Disaster relief efforts.

Here’s the deal: On March 23 and 24, the resort is offering $15 dollar evening lift tickets (normally $29) good from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Best of all, $5 from every ticket will go directly to Mercy Corps, which already has their boots on the ground in Japan. Skiers and riders can also purchase advance tickets online for as little as $10—and the full $5 will still be funneled to Mercy Corps.

Feel like digging a bit deeper into your wallet? Meadows’ restaurants will also be accepting additional contributions each night as well.

And for anyone who didn’t know, northern Japan happens to be home to some seriously epic snow. Here’s some footage that provides a reflective look at the country’s ski scene, and hopefully provides inspiration to lend a ski or two to the cause for our friends in the Land of the Rising Sun.
