St. Johns Gains a Chic New Guesthouse and Event Space
Despite St. Johns's growing reputation as one of Portland's next hot neighborhoods, until this year, the quirky little outpost had precisely zero hotels or motels for guests to crash at when visiting friends and relatives.
Enter Dayna McErlean and the Colony, a new 9,500-square-foot event space, commissary kitchen, and—most importantly—guesthouse.
"I got tired of hearing that St. Johns was going to blow up," she says. "I wanted to help instigate something."
Formerly a funeral home, and then the Crystal Temple church until 2012, the Colony's two rental units sit above a beautiful ballroom, dance studio, and a commissary kitchen. The one- and two- bedroom units sleep between 3 and 5, with generous kitchens and living spaces to accommodate longer-term stays—or, perhaps, wedding parties, following nuptials at nearby Cathedral Park. (Or, notes McErlean, companies might even consider for them for daytime company retreats.)
McErlean hopes to add more lodging options when she outfits two vintage RVs, currently parked behind the building.
