Hop Aboard the Portland Express

A peek inside the most Portland train car ever.

By Caitlin Feldman January 14, 2014

Pendleton upholstery, a crate of records, birdcage decorations, and a typewriter? This converted dining car is quite possibly more Portland than Portland itself.

Yes, starting next week, the Portland Express will begin making runs up and down the Pacific Northwest on the brand-new Mt. Jefferson Talgo Series 8 train between Eugene and Vancouver, B.C. (For more details on that train, click here.) The car's sponsors, Travel Portland and Amtrak Cascades, hope it will help lure would-be visitors to the Rose City.

The Portland immersion begins from the moment passengers see the car’s exterior, which is wrapped in bright art full of Portland scenes and the words "Portland is Happening Now." The interior is awash in warm colors, pinecones, and evergreen clippings. (Oh, yeah, there are also jars of “Portland Rain Extracted from the Purest Oregon Clouds.”)

“We set out to give those thinking about a winter trip to Portland a strong reason to visit,” says Jeff Miller, president and CEO of Travel Portland.

We say, "Well done!"
