Before there were cars, before there were planes, there was the locomotive. Romantic notion towards trains remain to this day, and thoughts of traveling to distant and exotic lands—whether Hogwarts, the Old West, or off to solve a baffling murder—continue to enchant the young and old alike.

This Saturday, May 10, the Oregon Department of Transportation hosts the 7th annual National Train Day. The free event features a festival atmosphere of live music, food vendors and displays highlighting all that which makes trains great.

The Portland based event at Union Station runs from 10am to 4pm, and will offer visitors the chance to tour the Amtrak Cascades’ trains, as well as classic trains from the 1930s and 40s. The event will also feature 30 rail-related booths from Talgo, Operation Lifesaver, Association of Oregon Rail and Transit Advocates and others.  Activities and games for the whole family are provided throughout the day.

Other cities getting in on the action are Salem, Albany, Kalamath Falls and Eugene. All aboard!
