Discover Dessert Wines

This month's shopping list

By Allison Jones January 23, 2013

FOR VALENTINE’S DAY, Star Black, wine director at Clyde Common and Olympic Provisions, encourages you to pop the cork on one of these dessert picks that won’t drown the flavor of that single-origin chocolate or leave you snoozing on the couch.

2008 Francis Tannahill Passito $28 (375 mL)
With complex guava, pineapple, and white peach aromas accented by honey notes and great acidity, this blend is great with fruity or creamy desserts.

2002 Domaine Huet Le Haut-Lieu Vouvray $55  Boasting citrus and apple notes with a smoky minerality, this golden-hued, biodynamic chenin blanc from France’s Loire Valley will wake up your palate after a meal.

Bodegas Hidalgo Alameda Cream Sherry $26
This isn’t your grandma’s cream sherry. Alive with deep toasted nuttiness and notes of cocoa and coffee, it’s seriously dreamy with anything chocolaty.

FRV 100 Jean-Paul Brun Sparkling Gamay $20  If you like a little après-meal effervescence, try this fun bubbly that’ll remind you of framboise and the first cherries of the season. (Bonus: it’s perfectly pink for V-day.)
