The touring production of the hit Broadway musical, The Book of Mormon, was easily the hottest ticket of the year in Portland, if not the past decade. Single seats sold out in hours. It also just happened to be the most brilliant, achingly funny, and atrociously inappropriate show in recent memory, too (read our review here).

Seems the folks at Broadway Across America Portland have some real compassion for the thousands who didn’t get tickets in time (what Jesus might’ve called agape), because the show is set to return next year for twice as many performances beginning July 8, 2014 (yes, over a year from now, but its not bad in comparison to how long folks have been waiting for the real rapture). Tickets are available now if you buy a season subscription and then buy the Book of Mormon add-on (and likely run less as a package than a single BoM scalper ticket on Broadway). Single tickets will be available some six-to-eight weeks before the show.

Also in the season are the Tony-sweeping Once (based off the Irish romantic music-rich movie of the same name), the Fosse-fave Chicago, the Green Day-fueled American Idiot, the stage adaptation of the Whoopi Goldberg-vehicle Sister Act (I will be taking my mother to this), and new productions of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita and the Cole-Porter classic Anything Goes. Also coming is a special non-subscription performance by the Blue Man Group (a friend of mine used to stage manage for them until she couldn’t take the smell of paint any longer, but for the audience, the fumes just heighten the euphoria).

All-in-all, it's a much heavier hitting and exciting season than the current one, which is rounding out its second half with fluffier pop-culture musicals. Both Once and Evita are only beginning their tours later this year, meaning we'll be one of the first city's to host the shows—another testament to the increasing pull that the local presenter, Portland Opera, has (we were the fifth stop for Book of Mormon).
