The Thermals’ New Video Is a TKO

Get knocked out by the Thermals in their music video for the ‘Sunset.’

By Aaron Scott May 21, 2013

The Thermals have been boxing your ears for a long time, but this is the first time they’ve punched you in the face. Granted, you got in a couple of good hits, sending bassist Kathy Foster to the floor. But like her rhythm, her fighting is indomitable.

Of course, the video for “The Sunset,” co-directed by Portland filmmaker Jeffrey Rowles and the Thermals themselves (they’re on a roll after directing “Born to Kill” in March), is a total homage to classic boxing films, including Rocky, Raging Bull, and Do the Right Thing, not to mention Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out. Plus, chickens and plenty of Portland sites.

Wear your mouth guard, and beware the slow motion upper cut. Also, if you like the song, check out our review of the album, Desperate Ground.
