Rediscover your indie music soul at Pickathon 2013 (Aug 2–4) at Pendarvis Farm just outside the city limits, a sustainable, family-oriented festival with headliners like Andrew Bird and Feist. Log off of Amazon and pick up some interesting reading material at the Portland Zine Symposium (Aug 10–11). Enjoy the homegrown design (and more than a little chaos) as 42 speed freaks tear down treacherous Mount Tabor at the PDX Adult Soapbox Derby (Aug 17).

Join 50,000 foodies at The Bite of Oregon (Aug 9–11) at Waterfront Park and taste savories prepared by premier local chefs, including Le Pigeon’s James Beard–winning Gabriel Rucker, paired with the best regional wines and craft beers, all to the beat of local bands. To work off the calories, capitalize on partial bridge closures and ride up to 36 miles on car-free spans during the iconic Bridge Pedal (Aug 11).

Ready to concoct nostalgia? Grab a picnic blanket and head down to Summer Free For All Movies in the Park (Aug 3–31) to watch classics like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off on the big screen. Get dirty (and then clean again) at the 5k Foam Fest (Aug 10), a mud- and foam-slinging obstacle course. Then hit the streets for the Hawthorne Street Fair (Aug 18), Portland’s longest-running fest of food, crafts, and face-painting.
