Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell have been playing together since 1975. Harris had recorded Crowell’s “Bluebird Wine” for her breakout album Pieces of the Sky, released early that year, and the country chanteuse asked Crowell to sit in with her “Hot Band” at a Nashville gig. So the legend goes, he left for Los Angeles the next day to join the band as rhythm guitarist.

The two have been singing each other’s songs and performing together off and on ever since, while also pursuing successful solo careers. Though Harris might be better known for her impressive 12 Grammy awards and glut of country chart conquering singles, Crowell is no slouch either. The songwriter has penned more than a dozen critically acclaimed albums with fantastic titles like But What Will The Neighbors Think and Sex and Gasoline, and his 1988 release Diamonds and Dirt produced an unassailable five straight number-one country singles.

Now, almost 40 years after they first met, they’re touring the country together in support of their first-ever album of duets, Old Yellow Moon. The record—which includes a rendition of that first collaboration, ”Bluebird Wine”—is a touching summation of nearly four decades worth of musical partnership, and the two performers’ chemistry is evident in every note.
