The Book: Oregon artist Chris Marley’s Biophilia is a weighty (literally—this thing could press your pants) 265-page tribute to the aesthetic wonders of insects, sea creatures, reptiles, and minerals. In the final section, “Unity,” juxtaposed images—an Australian budgerigar alongside Pacific Ocean limpets, a Peruvian whip scorpion beside a serpent star from Borneo—make sense of the whole, concordant communion of it all. 

The Movie: Remember the Mekons? Probably not, given that they’re the British punk provocateurs nobody’s ever heard of, despite their being on the go for nigh on 40 years. Filmmaker Joe Angio rights that wrong with his 2013 documentary Revenge of the Mekons. The acclaimed movie and its director come to the Hollywood this month. The Album: Supergroup alert! What would happen if Menomena and the National got together and then recorded with the love child of David Byrne and St. Vincent? The answer is Pfarmers—Portlander Danny Seim (Menomena), Bryan Devendorf (The National) and Dave Nelson (David Byrne, St. Vincent, Sufjan Stevens)—whose debut album, Gunnera, arrives this month. Think synth-laden sing-alongs with serious drum lines. A seed-bomb sculpture by Chicago artist Edward Cabral comes with the limited edition from label Jurassic Pop. For real.
