Brian Froud's "Hear, Here"

Remember the baby who got to sit on David Bowie’s lap in Labyrinth? Well he—that is, Toby Froud—is featuring in the opening exhibition at a new gallery on Hawthorne, called The Fernie Brae. The new space’s grand opening takes place on Friday, with Froud and his parents, artists Wendy and Brian, in attendance at the event.

The gallery is dedicated to fantasy and magic, with the opening show billed as a “blending of British and American visionary artists and crafts people—all dedicated to bringing Faerie to the human world.” An opening reception will take place on Friday, August 28 from 6pm.

Portland Musician Talks to Vice about his Court Battles

A Portland musician in a five-year battle to get his band name—deemed “offensive”—trademarked has aired his grievances in Vice magazine. Simon Tam, bass player with The Slants, formally applied for a trademark for the name in 2010, but a trademark examiner rejected his application, arguing that Asian-Americans would be offended.

With his case set for the Federal Court of Appeals in Washington DC on October 2, Tam—the son of two Chinese immigrants—spoke to Vice about racism and his long battle in the US courts.

Two new shows have been added after “record advance sales in Portland”, with a 3:30 pm show now slated for October 23, and an 8pm performance on October 25. Ty Boice leaves Post5

After almost five years at the helm, Post5 Theatre’s founding artistic director Ty Boice is moving on, along with his wife Cassandra, the company’s Associate Artistic Director. The four-year-old company began as a free Shakespeare company, and now boasts a seven-show season at its Sellwood home. Post5 is looking for a new artistic team to replace the Seattle-bound Boices.
