Makin' Whoopee!: Sex-Positive Entertainment for Post-Election Portland
Amory Jane brings Whoopee! to town.

Amory Jane is many things: sex educator, comedic storyteller, feminist filmmaker, and podcast host. As education coordinator at women-owned sex toy boutique She Bop, she has taught folks of all backgrounds, ages (over 18, that is), and motives on topics that range from the use of cannabis in the bedroom to best fellatio practices. Her latest contribution to the good people of Portland is Whoopee!: A Sex-Positive Variety Show, to be seen at Crush Bar this Sunday, December 4.
The show, which centers on various aspects of sexuality and body positivity, will feature up-and-coming comedians, burlesque dancers such as Lily Le Fauve and Jasmine Rain, performance art by rough sex educator Stella Harris, and never-before-seen entries to the HUMP! Film Fest.
Whoopee! was originally slated for February as a Valentine’s event, but after the election, performers and other colleagues urged Jane to push it up to December.
“There was a lot of stress, and a lot of people were feeling really afraid and wondering how it was going to impact all of us,” she says. “The show is meant to be empowering and give people a safe place to express themselves, both sexually and politically.”
The show isn’t going to be all glass-half-empty, though. Jane says that while performers will definitely express anxiety about recent political developments, it’s also about embracing the progress that’s been made in the past decade—recognizing non-binary genders, for example, and furthering LGBTQ rights. “It’s both a celebration and a place where people can get together as a community in a time that’s really uncertain,” she says.
