Branch out from Spotify and Netflix while you’re at home this weekend with some homegrown arts and culture, brought to you by Northwest Children’s Theater, the Oregon Symphony, Profile Theatre and some local film centers.

Essential Sounds 

Storytelling and music intersect to spotlight a group of essential workers every other Sunday at 5 p.m, brought to you by the Oregon Symphony. “In times of joy or sorrow, we express through music,” says Symphony President and CEO Scott Showalter. These bimonthly performances include personal stories, span a variety of musical genres, and integrate video graphics. Free

Film 

Shirley at the Northwest Film Center Virtual Cinema 

The Northwest Film Center and the Portland Art Museum have partnered with film production and distribution company Neon to present award-winning Sundance film Shirley. Elisabeth Moss plays Shirley Jackson, the renowned horror writer, who finds inspiration when she and her husband take in a newlywed couple. Playing on the border between biography and fiction, Josephine Decker produces a horror film akin to the known works of Jackson. Ticket proceeds go towards supporting the NW Film Center and PAM. $5.99

Cinema 21 Virtual Cinema  

Cinema 21 is also partnering with indie distributors to bring first-run indie and art films to their viewers. Tickets to this unique virtual cinema can be accessed through the Cinema 21 website alongside a long list of films, including, most recently, Spaceship Earth. Ticket proceeds are split between the distributors of each film and Cinema 21, to help them make ends meet during COVID closures. $4–12

Theater 

Seussical Online 

Join NWCT between June 17-30 to watch Dr. Seuss characters come to life in the company's virtual performance of Seussical. What was originally intended for a live audience onstage, has transitioned into a virtual show with live vocals and stop-motion animation. Virtual tickets give families 24 hour access to the 75-minute performance online along with crafts, recipes and games, and (depending on the package you spring for) can include a Zoom meet and greet with the cast. $1–100

Claudia, a Viral Love Story 

Profile Theatre brings you Claudia, a Viral Love Story, an audio drama by a group of nine writers, brought to life by a nine-person cast. The first and second episodes are available now, with three more scheduled to drop before the end of the month. The podcast is free to stream, but Profile is accepting donations from listeners to raise money for Cascade AIDS Project and Prism Health. Free
