3 Newish Portland Bookstores to Know About

Because one city can never have too many bookshops, we say.

Let’s state the obvious: there’s no shortage of bookstores in Portland, from famous favorites like Powell’s to children’s bookstores like Green Bean Books to Portland’s first Black-owned brick-and-mortar bookstore, Third Eye Books. Still, we say one can never have enough books—or places to purchase them.

In addition to the oldies-but-goodies, there’s a handful of notable, newish (opened in the past year) bookshops to consider the next time you’re in need of a good read.

Up Up Books

BUCKMAN

This shop is a sanctuary for readers who are looking to explore titles from diverse authors, as well as small-press publishers. In addition to housing a curated collection that highlights the stories less told, Michelle Gutman’s Up Up Books is also enthusiastically open to the community to use for events. Just beyond the kids’ section is “The Space,” a small room that can be rented out for book clubs, workshops, or whatever literary gathering you can imagine.

Bishop and Wilde

northwest district

Literary readings, book launches, and similar events keep Bishop and Wilde buzzing in the evenings and on weekends. But one of the most rewarding times to visit, and even chat with owners Tyler Dolan and Melissa L. Amstutz, is on a weekday afternoon. Take the time to peruse the shop, which shares a space with publisher Tin House Books, to discover a fun mix of reads. Find a gem on the discount rack, sharpen your green thumb with the selection of plant and gardening books, or discover you next page-turner on the new-release table.

The small but mighty space that is Hi Books.

Hi Books

Downtown

Quality over quantity seems to be the mentality of Hi Books. The quaint space, located a few blocks from Portland State University, is meticulously curated with independent magazines, photo books, and zines. Artsy couple Fawn and Jeff opened the space in October 2022. In a year’s time, they haven’t just settled into their digs; they’ve created a community, too. In addition to paying homage to print, the 250-square-foot shop serves as an art gallery, allowing local artists to share real estate with the eclectic collection of publications.
