Halloween Spirits 2010

Creepy cocktails for a haunted house party

By John Chandler October 29, 2010

Halloween is here and the subject is cocktails. As you may recall from last year, this haunted holiday is sorely lacking when it comes to distinctive drinks—unless you like them gooey, gimmicky, and tooth-achingly sweet. I’ve compiled five new ones this time around: two were sent to me by a publicist for Midori Melon Liqueurs, two are from Three Olives vodka (a company that’s never encountered an occasion, whether traditional, triumphant, or tragic, that couldn’t be improved by signature cocktails), and one from local singer-songwriter Leigh Marble, who tweeted me a recipe for Candy Corn Cordials. Sounds divine, Leigh! Thanks!

Note The ingredients list from liquor companies relentlessly plug their own products (duh!). You needn’t feel obligated to demonstrate brand loyalty. And needless to say, if you have your own spooky spirits recipe, feel free to share it with us.

Candy Corn Cordials

For the infused vodka:

1/2 cup candy corn
1 1/2 cups vodka

For the cordials:

2 ounces orange liqueur
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1 large egg white
Candy corn, for garnish

Infuse the vodka: Combine the candy corn and vodka in an airtight container; set aside for at least 3 hours, then strain.

Make the cordials: Add 4 ounces of the candy corn vodka, the orange liqueur, lemon juice and egg white to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds. Strain into 2 chilled martini glasses and garnish with candy corn.

Midori Melon Eye-Tini

1 ¼ parts Midori Melon liqueur
¾ parts SKYY Infusions Citrus
½ part Finest Call Agave Syrup
2 parts of Canada Dry Green Tea Ginger Ale
2 parts Finest Call Sweet & Sour Mix
3 Orange Wedges
2 Fresh Ripped Basil Leaves
Strawberry Sundae Syrup

In a shaker glass combine Midori Melon liqueur, SKYY infusions Citrus, Finest Call Agave Syrup, 3 Orange Wedges and 2 Fresh Ripped Basil Leaves. Muddle ingredients together. Add ice and sweet & sour mix. Shake for 10 seconds. Add Canada Dry Green Tea Ginger Ale and roll drink back and forth between your mixing tin and shaker glass. Strain into a chilled martini glass drizzled with Strawberry Sundae Syrup to give an effect of a bloodshot eye.

Midori Halloween Harvest

1 part Midori Melon Liqueur
1 part Dark Rum
1 part Light Rum
2 part White Cranberry Juice
1 part Unfiltered Apple Juice
1 part Simple Syrup
Juice of one lemon

For a Punch Bowl (32 ounces) multiply this recipe 8 times. Add the liquid ingredients and mix well. Top with apple slices, blueberries, and melon balls.

Garnish: Chilled red seedless grape at bottom of glass (To look like an eyeball) and spanked Basil leaf floated on top of cocktail for aroma.

Jack-O-Lantern

3 oz. Three Olives Rangtang Vodka
¾ oz. orange juice
¾ oz. lime juice

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

Rangtang Zombie-Tini

2 oz. Three Olives Rangtang Vodka
1 oz. lime sours
1.5 oz POM Wonderful Pomegranate Juice

Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass, garnish with a lime twist.
