New Details on NW 23rd’s Southland Whiskey Kitchen
Add another tally to the westside column of 2012 restaurant openings, because we’ve got more details about NW 23rd’s next Southern food spot. Dubbed Southland Whiskey Kitchen, the eatery will be a mash-up of steak and soul food with a healthy dose of Southern comfort—in the form of whiskey, naturally.
Decked with handmade chandeliers, the 124-seat restaurant from Zak Melang and Nate Opper’s Seattle-based Mocore Restaurants and Development will take over a 4000 square foot space on NW 23rd, along with patio seating along the foot-traffic heavy street. The Mocore team currently owns and operates both Casa Del Matador locations in Portland, and the new smokehouse will occupy the same building as the regional chain’s NW 23rd outpost.
The family-friendly restaurant will attempt to join the ranks of Portland’s burgeoning barbeque scene, offering slow-smoked pork, wood-fired steaks, fried chicken, and baby back ribs along with sides like collard greens and peach cobbler.
On the liquid side of things, Southland will stock a hearty crop of hand-selected whiskeys both domestic and international, along with beer, wine, and signature cocktails. True to the menu concept, the cocktail list will feature Portlandified takes on Southern sippers like the Mint Julep and Southern Punch.
