Eat Beat’s News to Chew

The dining room at Corazón.
Southwest
SW Washington: Three weeks after his abrupt departure from Tabla, chef Anthony Cafiero has found a new culinary perch. The modernist-leaning Cafiero has landed in the kitchen at the still-in-transition Corazón, trying his hand at the restaurant’s newly-retooled menu (think pork belly and lamb barbacoa tacos, chilled garlic and almond soup, Spanish octopus salad, and nopale and Mexican mushroom quesadillas). Meanwhile, lauded chef Christopher Israel tells Eat Beat’s Karen Brooks that he is officially out of the kitchen. Israel stepped away in June, shortly after Eat Beat reported that Corazon was changing focus only one month after its anticipated opening. That plan didn’t work, either. What went wrong? Says Israel: "Even with a scaled back menu, I took it too personally, trying to honor my background. I didn’t want to be remembered as a taqueria. It’s hard to find good cooks; there’s a shortage of talent right now. Everyone thinks Mexican food is easy, but it’s not.” Now he’s back at Gruner and busy expanding the snacking options at his next-door bar, the design-savvy Kask. 1205 SW Washington St
SW 12th: Lisa Herlinger-Esco and Becky Burnett’s Ruby Jewel Scoops is slated to open this Saturday, July 28th. As previously reported, the shop will feature an old-school soda fountain with counter seating, house-made candy, and their famous ice cream sandwiches. We’ll be on the scene this weekend to grab photos and first bites from the new space. 428 SW 12th Avenue
SW Market: Market—the next ChefStable project highlighting the culinary creations of chef Troy Furuta in the former Carafe Bistro space—is set to open on Monday, July 30th. The 100-seat restaurant will feature "Continental cuisine" during nightly dinner and weekday lunch service. According to the sign-up site for the first week’s preview dinners, the menu will feature a constantly shifting market-inspired menu with dishes like pan-roasted salmon darne with Thai basil and bucatini with ground bacon and Balinese long peppercorn. 200 SW Market St
