Pi Day around Portland

March 14 (i.e. 3.14) is celebrated annually by math geeks and pie lovers throughout the land. Here are some ways you honor this crustiest of holidays:

  • Northeast's Random Order is offering $1 off every slice of pie all day long.
  • Downtown's The Original will be selling small hand pies and giving away free slices of pies to those who correctly answer a set of questions on their Twitter stream
  • At Southeast's Pacific Pie Co., slices of pie will be discounted to $3.14 and whole pies marked down to $23.14. 

Biwa's Birthday Burger Bash

What: The Biwa team will be celebrating their sixth anniversary by offering the much-discussed Biwa Burger—a flavorful patty layered with BBQ pork and topped with spicy kimchi mayo, typically available very late night only—all night long for just $8.
When: Friday, March 15

Village Gardens Spring Fundraiser

What: Join chef Cathy Whims of Nostrana to benefit Village Gardens' work to create a more just and healthy food system in Portland. The event will feature great food, community participant presentations, and a silent and live auction to raise funds to launch small market garden and farm businesses in Portland, create a community incubator kitchen, and establish a seasonal farmers market in New Columbia.
When: Friday, March 15 from 6 to 9 pm
Where: Bauccio Commons, University of Portland

Taste of Andalucia Sherry Tasting at Bar Vivant

What: More than 30 sherries of all styles will be open for tasting, accompanied by tapas and flamenco performances by Laura Onizuka. Plus, Peter Liem will be on site to sign copies of Sherry, Manzanilla & Montilla.
When: Saturday, March 16 from 4 to 7 pm 
Where: Bar Vivant 2225 E Burnside St
How Much:
$15 at the door, including tastings from these fantastic sherry producers

St. Patrick’s Day at the Beaverton Farmers Market

What: A special edition of the Winter Market with a welcome speech from Beaverton Mayor Denny Doyle, live music from the Sir James McDonald Pipe Band, a performance by the Daire Academy of Irish Dance, special Paddy’s Day treats, and a Mr. Potato Head craft booth.
When: Saturday, March 16th from 10 am to 1:30 pm
Where: The Beaverton Farmers Market at SW Hall Blvd between 3rd and 5th Streets
How Much: Free! 

Firehouse Beer Dinner with Heater Allen

What: Join NE Dekum's Firehouse Restaurant for five-courses of wood-fired cuisine with beer pairings from McMinnville brewery Heater Allen, known for distinctive all-malt lager and other German and Czech style beers. Head Brewer Rick Allen will be on hand to talk all things brew-worthy. Dishes will include pizza with housemade sausage and onion, roasted bone marrow with watercress and salsa verde, and wood grilled pork ribs with horseradish gremolata.
When: Monday, March 18 at 6 pm
Where: Firehouse Restaurant 711 NE Dekum Street

Dine Like a Caveman at Departure

What: A one-night-only Paleo dinner from chef Greg Gourdet that will take diners back to the Paleolithic Age (with utensils). For this five-course hunter-gatherer-style dinner, Gourdet has teamed up with Scott Laney of Eat Oregon First to source wild plants, fish and meat from Oregon’s land and waters. Dishes will include grilled butter clam and sweet potato chowder with crispy chicken skin, local wild duck with coconut creamed kale, and grass fed sirloin with basil and coriander.
When: Thursday, March 21st at 7 pm
Where: Departure 525 SW Morrison Street
How Much: $60 per person for five courses.  

Oregon Distillers Guild 3rd Annual TOAST Craft Spirits Festival

What: The largest craft spirits tasting in North America returns to Portland, with over 150 local and international spirits from over fifty distillers. This year's event will feature a Food Cart Court, spotlighting some of Portland's favorite mobile kitchens.
When: 
Friday, March 22nd from 5 to 10 pm and Saturday, March 23rd from 1 pm to 10 pm.
Where: 
The World Trade Center, sky bridge level, 121 SW Salmon St
How Much: 
$20 advance, $25 at the door. Advance tickets available here. Proceeds from TOAST support the Oregon Distillers Guild.
