Local Nut Butter Supports U.S. Trail Running Team

Bogg's Trail Butter's new blend will benefit our country's competitors in the World Trail Championships—including one ultramarathon runner from Portland.

Bogg’s Trail Butter, one of Portland's newest plant-based protein staples, offers a lineup of crave-worthy flavors like Ozark Original, Mountaineer Maple, and Expedition Expresso, but this month creators Jeff and Brad Boggess reveal their newest blend—one inspired by Team USA and some local ultrarunners.

Local runners know Bogg’s Trail Butter well, as the founders of the triple-nut blend are constantly spotted serving up generous helpings of the nutty stuff at ultramarathons and endurance events around the region. Even if you’re not logging hundreds of miles in the mountains every couple weeks, it’s easy to see that Bogg’s dedication to endurance sports parallels its knack for flavor.

The Boggess brothers have teamed up with a fellow Pacific Northwest company, Flora Health, to create a limited edition ‘Red, White & Blue’ blend of nuts, seeds, and dried fruits in support of the U.S. trail running team. This 2015 US team was chosen for the IAU Trail World Championships by the USA Track & Field’s mountain ultra trail executive committee, and includes Portland’s own Yassine Diboun, co-founder of outdoor training outfit Animal Athletics.

In addition to Bogg's signature mixture of almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, flax seeds, sea salt, honey, and vanilla bean, the new race-ready flavor adds red goji berries, roasted coconut, and dried blueberries. The star-spangled butter also has a dose of Flora Health, a dietary supplement of herbal essences that may promote detoxification.

The goal of this collaboration is to raise money to cover travel expenses for the team, which will be heading to the International Association of Ultrarunners’ fourth world trail running event. Unlike previous years, 2015 will be the first year the event is given the title of World Trail Championships. On Saturday, May 30, the trail team will compete against 14 other countries on an 86-kilometer race through Annecy, France. With 5,300 meters of climbing throughout the course, the runners will certainly need ample fuel, and Bogg's has their back.

Find it: On Monday, May 4, Bogg’s launched pre-order sales online, with shipping beginning around May 11. A few select retail locations will also be selling the eight-ounce jars in support of the athletes. The limited edition blend will be sold for $10 a jar, with half of the profits going to the team.
