With the design universe’s proliferation of colors, shapes, grades, and materials, wading through tile choices can scramble your aesthetic sensibilities. To do battle with the chaos, Collin Kayser, a senior designer at local firm Garrison Hullinger Interior Design, recommends simplifying the approach. Before plunging into the myriad options, he advises that you first ponder three key questions: What other colors/styles are you working with? What does the tile need to do? How much can you spend? Once you’re armed with the answers, launch your quest for the perfect tile with these five of Kayser’s current favorites

Valley
With clean lines and intricate angles, ModCraft’s Valley tile has a glazed finish that adds both color and texture. Kayser suggests using it for a feature wall, highlighting its eye-catching raised surface. From $68/square foot

Topo Collection Pinwheel
Portland-based Clayhaus specializes in unique, customizable tiles with retro-modern patterns. Their organic, swirling Pinwheel is a stunning choice for a backsplash in a retro kitchen. From $104.40/square foot

Versailles
