The statement Out with the old, in with the new doesn’t exactly ring true for Anne De Wolf, Portland-based interior designer and co-owner of Arciform, a design-build firm that specializes in restoring and remodeling older homes. De Wolf, who has been in the business for over 20 years, focuses on revamping spaces built before 1970, bringing new life to old infrastructure. Take, for example, the remodel of a 1909 Colonial-style home nestled among the Southwest Hills in Portland.

The process began back in 2010, when De Wolf was given the opportunity to create a family dream home for four. The new owners, both doctors at OHSU, hoped to enhance the original Colonial style by creating an open and airy space with a classic palette, while also adding bits of funky flair to make their home the perfect place to de-stress.

“It was not that predictable as a designer,” says De Wolf. “What was fun with these clients was that they were very open to suggestions and ideas. They focused on the living spaces rather than the bathrooms and the kitchen.”

The remodel included altering the layout of the home for better functionality and remodeling the master bedroom, basement, kitchen, and bathrooms, while also adding new furnishings and decorating the interior of the space. Maximizing the small kitchen space was also important, so tall windows and beautiful white cabinetry from local wood shop Versatile Wood Products were added to bring light into the room.

The completed home wrapped in 2015 and features four bedrooms, four full bathrooms, and two half bathrooms. De Wolf says her favorite space is the sunroom, which features large open windows and is filled with a variety of flowers and plants for an earthy, warm feel.
