Editor’s Note: Portland Monthly’s “Property Watch” column takes a weekly look at an interesting home in Portland’s real estate market (with periodic ventures to the burbs and points beyond, for good measure). This week: a Southern Oregon ranch on the Rogue River. Got a home you think would work for this column? Get in touch at [email protected].

Dallas ruled the ’80s. Airing from 1978 to 1991, the show (not to be confused with its brief revival from 2012 to 2014) chronicled the dramas of a Texas oil family, boasting big hair, big hats, and season-ending cliffhangers that piqued mainstream culture, including the catchphrase “Who shot J. R.?” about the murder attempt on a lead character. The latter was such a worldwide mystery at the time that even former presidents and Queen Elizabeth were reported to want to know the answer. (They had to wait eight months.)

Actor Patrick Duffy is widely known for playing a central role on the show (as J. R.'s brother). Less well known is that the Montana-born Duffy, a University of Washington grad, has owned a large ranch in Southern Oregon for 30 years, recently putting it up for sale for $14 million.

In Eagle Point, about 20 minutes from Medford International Airport, the Duffy Ranch has a total of 390 acres that includes 14 legal parcels, with a mix of homes, irrigated farmland, and a fishing pond stocked with bass. The 3,000-square-foot main residence fronts a pristine 79-acre section of the Rogue River. “The river is the only reason that we considered buying this property,” Duffy says in a real estate promotional video. “There is nothing to mar the view.”

Inside, the main home commits to a lodge-style look, with the living areas wrapped in wood, a chunky stone fireplace, and two porches. The custom kitchen features painted Shaker cabinetry with iron hardware, a large central island, and a South Bend stove that was pulled from an original homestead cabin on the property and stunningly refurbished. The adjacent butler’s pantry has more built-in cabinetry, this time painted a brilliant red.

There are more custom touches inside and out, like the art gallery/library with vaulted ceilings and inlaid wood floors, and the additional buildings set around the main house. Those include two guest homes, a pool house with lap pool, a wine cellar dug into a hillside, and a spa cabin—the latter called such because it is styled as a little log cabin at the end of a path, and has a hot tub inside.

The rest of the expansive acreage has six additional homes with rental income potential, forest and fields and walking trails, and copious wildlife, like a resident elk herd, making it truly feel like a world unto itself.
