Property Watch: A Dinner Party–Ready Condo with Vintage Charm

In this era of shared lounges and studios masquerading as one-bedrooms, it’s always nice to see an apartment built with the entertaining spaces one would expect from a Craftsman house—and at 902 square feet with just one bedroom, there’s plenty of room for them in this Nob Hill condo.
Property Watch has featured a unit in the Tudor Arms before, but in case you missed it, it’s a cool building. Built in 1915, it was designed by Carl Linde, the architect behind many apartment buildings in grand historic revival styles—think Tudor or Mediterranean—in Portland and beyond. This building's Jacobethan Revival architecture, a style evocative of Renaissance England, earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
Linde spared no drama on the façade. It has a striking exterior, with deep red brick set against vivid white terra-cotta trim and ornaments, including quoins and ostentatious parapets. The grand archway welcoming visitors into a courtyard is bookended by columns, with a kind of stone filigree at the top.

As with any historic condo building, the period charm varies by unit. This one is brimming with it, in large part because of the layout. The foyer leads into an honest-to-god dining room, complete with coffered ceiling and wainscoting.
The kitchen is, refreshingly, separate, adding to the formality of the dining room while also providing some extra space for built-ins. It’s not huge, but rows of period cabinets stretch all the way to the ceiling.

French doors separate the dining room from the cozy living room, which opens up to a generous balcony. It used to have a closet with a window; now it has a cozy office space with a built-in desk and plenty of built-in shelving (and a window).

If you’re worried about the office taking up much-desired closet space, don’t be: There are two other walk-in closets in the home. One’s in the hallway and is big enough for a short person to sleep in. The other, not quite as large, is in the bedroom, along with picture rail molding and a second balcony. That second balcony sits along a very narrow breezeway facing a concrete wall, so it’s not exactly for sunbathing, but it’s still nice to have.

The bathroom is giant, with counter and cabinet space that rivals the kitchen.
Property Watch’s interim writer is on loan from Seattle, and is going to need some time to recover from the $300,000 price tag—up north, all that'll get you is a parking spot and a shoebox.
